Meet Dexter and his friend Riley! This amigurumi pattern features a dino-mite duo, both eager to become your friend!
Am I the only one that is instantly filled with childhood glee when I think of dinosaurs?
In an instant, I am once again a big eyed 8 year old girl. Full of giggling awe inspiring wonderment. Just knowing that these fantastic creatures once ruled the very same earth I live on today, is awe inspiring. I love learning about the life long before humans, existing millions of years ago. Studies of fossils that have survived the test of time giving insight to the world that was. Science is simply amazing, and dinosaurs are one of my absolute favorite parts of it’s history! Not to mention, the movies that come from facts (and some fiction) further fuel my adoration. To me, big or small, dinosaurs are always dino-mite!
What better place to start my fiber art prehistoric creations, than with one of my favorite species! Meet Dexter the Dilophosaurs and his buddy Riley the Raptor!
Crocheting Dexter the Dilophosaurus
Both Dexter and Riley amigurumi are created using worsted weight 4 yarn and 4mm hooks. Both dinosaurs look great in solid or multicolor bodies, and it is creative fun deciding on dexter fan accents to match! You will want 2 colors (body and claw) for Riley, and up to 4 colors for Dexter (body, claws, and then the fans)
Of course, you are going to want to grab some amazing Suncatcher Craft Eyes Dragon Eyes in 18mm to help bring your new friend to life. These eyes are perfect and quickly become the focal point to this dazzling dino! Any 18mm cat style safety eye will work as well, but there is just something extra special about these.
Dexter is an intermediate level pattern. There are some shaping rounds during creations, as well as several pieces to join together.
I have added in many pictures within the PDF to help you navigate as you crochet. You will also find a text only section at the end to easily print. Additionally, there is a full length video walkthrough in both Right hand/ Mirrored Left Hand views. You can find these videos available for free on my YouTube channel!
The Written PDF form of the Dexter the dilophosaurus crochet pattern can be found for purchase in my Etsy, Ravelry, Lovecrafts & Amigurumi.com shops!
Make sure to join us in February 2022 for a Crochet CAL featuring this dazzling dinosaur!
Fun Facts about the Dilophosaurus
- Dilophosaurus were alive during the Early Jurassic period, approximately 200 million years ago!
- They are estimated to be up to 23 feet long and weighing almost 900 lbs.
- Are a theropod. They feature hollow bones and 3 toed limbs
- They are carnivores, with an estimated 33 teeth.
I have a small confession, I have modeled Dexter the dilophosaurus off the more recognizable, but inaccurate, version. While neck frills and the ability to spit venom were suggested in the movie Jurrasic Park, in reality, the dilophosaurus had neither of those traits! To create one more true to history, leave off the neck fans.
